I have no idea why some people tend to become quite serious when it comes to learning English, I mean, I'm often nonplussed at their suggestion(s). Speaking about their first language, they wouldn't want to read boring textbooks to brush up on the language. I believe language learning should be fun, to begin with. HA!! You seem to forget one big fact here. When in conversation with someone, if you ask the person in front of you to speak slowly or articulately and clearly, s/he will make sure you can understand. On the other hand, you'll be completely stuck if you are silent even when in trouble understanding. Just like that.
